Clean Up Your New WordPress Install Before You Start Posting…
Now that you have a brand new WordPress install on your site it’s time to do a little housekeeping… Nothing to drastic or complicated just a few simple tweaks to get you on the right track.
To make it even easier for you I recorded a quick video tutorial showing you exactly what to do.
Get rid of the generic stuff!
With any new WordPress install there are always a few generic additions that come along with it. These are the things we will be getting rid of today.
To start off with I always like to delete the sample page and post along with the sample comments.
You don’t need them…
Then there is all of the previous years “WordPress themes” that are never used, so go ahead and delete those too.
And whats with the “hello dolly” plugin? I don’t think I’ve ever actually seen a WordPress site that even uses it! …Delete.
Ok, enough of the deleting already, lets get into what you can change to make your site more Search Engine Friendly.
What are permalinks and why should I change them?
A permalink is that thing you see in the address bar above ^ that looks like this: http://robertbolgar.com/post-headline-goes-here
It basically tells the reader what the page or post is about and it also helps the search engines decide if your page is relevant to what someone is searching for.
The default WordPress permalink is not user friendly and looks terrible…. So Change It!
I set this site’s permalink to /%postname%/ so it will just show the my domain name them the name of the post…
Simple yet effective!
I hope the video above helps you out a little and if you have any questions, shoot me a comment below and I’ll answer with what limited knowledge I have. lol
To your success,
